I know. You’ve been waiting forever. I’ve been incredibly itinerant. I am a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad person. I know.
Here’s the seventh chapter of my weekly romantic suspense serial, In Her Sights, after a too-long hiatus (again: I know). An excerpt from “The Beginning of a Long Night”:
“So. Your own people are trying to kill you,” Beth said casually as she hopped up on her kitchen counter. “What do you think that means?”
“Funny, back when I was listening in on all your phone conversations, that sarcastic tone didn’t bother me quite so much.” As soon as he’d gained entry to the apartment, Vick had moved to the front window and lowered the slatted teak blinds. Now he paced from one side of the room to the other, her open living space allowing her a center-stage view of his tedious floor show.
She palmed her cell, idly scrolling through the legions of missed calls from Casey, Tobias, and, worst of all, her father. “It’s an inherited trait,” she mumbled. She couldn’t even contemplate talking to her father now; she hadn’t spoken to Frank Faraday since right before she picked up and moved to Chicago, and as with many peel-off-the-bandaid activities, she kept delaying it, hoping that would somehow make the stilted awkwardness between them just…go away.
He’d been so disappointed in her after Baghdad.
“Elisabeth.” Vick’s annoyingly delicious accented voice wasn’t coming from across the room anymore. She blinked out of her brief reverie to find him standing in front of her. “You okay?”
She sighed. “That is a stupid question, Agent Vick.”
“You looked sad all of a sudden.” He settled his hands atop her thighs, as confidently as if he’d had the right to touch her body for years. “I don’t think we’re ready for sad yet. We still have a long night ahead of us.”
